甲骨文“秋”画的是一只虫：头上两根长须向外撇，方形的头里一横是眼睛，下面是身子和脚。虫形不成问题，成问题的是它怎么变成“秋天”的“秋”：一说它是秋天鸣叫的蟋蟀一类，听见虫声就知道节令到了；一说它是啃庄稼的蝗虫，有些写法在虫下面还加“火”，读作烧蝗除害。两说各有人信，所以图形解释标为“较可能”。到小篆改写成“禾”加“火”，跟甲骨文的虫形已经不是一回事。

Oracle-bone 秋 draws an insect: two long feelers sweeping out from the head, a bar inside the square head for the eyes, and a slender body with legs below. The insect is not in doubt; how it came to write 秋 “autumn” is. One account makes it a cricket, whose song announces the season; another makes it a locust eating the crop, and some forms add 火 (fire) below, read as burning the locusts off the fields. Both readings have support, so the picture is graded probable. The small seal script replaces all of this with 禾 (grain) plus 火 (fire), which is no longer the oracle-bone insect at all.
