甲骨文“冬”一般认为是一条两端各打一个结的绳子：绳走到尽头，事情也就完了，所以它本来是“终”字。一年的最后一段正是冬天，这个字就被拿来记冬天；后来为了分工，另加“糸”造出“终”。写法有宽有窄，有的干脆不打结，只把两头收粗。《说文》说“冬，四时尽也，从仌从夂”，那是照小篆已经变样的字形分析的，不过它也点明“夂”就是古文的“终”。

Oracle-bone 冬 is generally taken to be a hanging cord with a knot tied at each end: when the cord runs out the thing is finished, so this was originally the character 終 “to end”. Winter is the last stretch of the year, so the graph was used for it, and 糸 (silk) was later added to make a separate 終. The forms run from wide to narrow, and some leave the knots out and merely thicken the ends. 說文 says “冬: the four seasons exhausted; from 仌 (ice) and 夂”, an analysis of the already-altered seal form — though it does note that 夂 is the old form of 終.
