甲骨文“申”画的是闪电：中间一条曲折的主干，两旁窜出短杈，正是雷雨天里那道亮光。它本来就是“电”字，后来被借去当十二地支的第九位，人们只好加上“雨”另造了“電”——借用不等于来历不清楚，图形本身没有争议。卜辞里的“申”多半是记日子的地支。写法有的棱角分明，有的整条卷成弯钩。《说文》说“申，神也，七月阴气成，体自申束”，那是汉代人从字音和阴阳观念上作的解释。

Oracle-bone 申 draws lightning: a crooked main line with short forks darting off each side — the flash in a thunderstorm. This was the original character for 電 “lightning”; it was later borrowed for the ninth of the twelve earthly branches, so 雨 (rain) had to be added on top to make a separate 電. A borrowing does not make the origin unclear, and the picture itself is not in doubt. In the divination records 申 is usually the branch in a date. Some forms are all sharp angles, others curl the whole stroke into hooks. 說文 explains it through sound and yin-yang doctrine — “申 is spirit; in the seventh month the yin force completes” — a Han-dynasty reading.
