甲骨文“雷”是在“申”（闪电）的曲线旁边再串上两三个圈。那些圈一般认为画的是雷声隆隆滚动的样子，后来固定写成“畾”。圈的数目不固定，有两个也有三四个；形状有圆有方，有的圈里还加一点。小篆写作“靁”，上面又加了“雨”，《说文》说“畾象回转形”，跟甲骨文这几个滚动的圈正好对得上。

Oracle-bone 雷 hangs two or three rings along the zigzag of 申 (lightning). The rings are generally taken to picture the rolling of the thunder, and they later settled into the component 畾. Their number varies from two to four, they may be round or square, and some carry a dot inside. The small-seal form 靁 adds 雨 (rain) on top, and 說文 says “畾 pictures the rolling round”, which matches the oracle-bone rings.
