In oracle-bone script 風 (wind) and 鳳 (the phoenix) share one graph: a great bird with a crest and spread tail feathers. To keep them apart scribes often added a square frame, the component 凡, to carry the sound — but they added it inconsistently, so which word is meant still has to come from the sentence. Because one drawing is read as two characters, the picture is graded probable. The 小學堂 database holds only three attested forms of this headword, so all three are drawn here. 說文 analyses the seal form as “from 虫 (insect) with 凡 as the phonetic”, by which time the bird was no longer visible.
