甲骨文“鸟”画一只侧立的鸟，喙、眼、身、爪、尾都在。《说文》把“鸟”说成长尾鸟的总名、“隹”说成短尾鸟；但在甲骨文里两者本是同一类画法，卜辞中常常通用，字形上“鸟”一般刻得更繁，头上多出冠毛，身下多出利爪。

Oracle-bone 鸟 draws a bird in profile complete with beak, eye, body, claw and tail. 說文 calls 鸟 the general name for long-tailed birds and 隹 for short-tailed ones, but in oracle-bone script the two are the same picture and are used interchangeably in the inscriptions; 鸟 is simply cut in more detail, often with a crest on the head and a claw below the body.
