甲骨文“鱼”整条竖写：上面是头，中间几道横画表示鳞和鳃，两旁伸出鳍，最下面分叉的是尾。竖着写是因为甲骨文一行一行往下刻，竖行里正好放得下一整条鱼。

Oracle-bone 鱼 stands the whole fish on end: the head at the top, a few cross bars for scales and gills, fins to the sides, and the forked tail at the bottom. It is written downward because oracle-bone text was cut in vertical columns, and a whole fish fits neatly into one.
