“隹”和“鸟”在甲骨文里本是同一类画法，都是侧立的鸟形，卜辞中常常通用。“隹”刻得简：头小、身短，翅羽只用两三道斜画表示，下面收成一只脚。《说文》说“隹”是短尾鸟的总名，那是汉代的归纳。

隹 and 鸟 are the same picture in oracle-bone script — a bird in profile — and the inscriptions use them interchangeably. 隹 is the plainer cutting: a small head, a short body, two or three slanting strokes for the wing feathers, and a single foot below. Calling 隹 the general name for short-tailed birds is 說文's Han-dynasty tidying-up.
