甲骨文“旬”是一条盘卷起来的线，顶上加一个小叉；晚期的写法常在圈里再放一个“日”。这个圈画的究竟是什么，说法不一：多数古文字学者认为它就是“绕一圈”的样子，一段日子走完又回到起点；《说文》则说它“从勹、日”，把外面那一笔讲成人弯臂环抱。绕圈的说法领先，因此图形解释标为“较可能”。用法本身很清楚：商人十天为一旬，每到旬末就占卜下一旬有没有灾祸，卜辞里到处是“卜旬”。

Oracle-bone 旬 is a line coiled into a loop with a small cross at the top; later forms often set a 日 (sun) inside the loop. What the coil depicts is not agreed: most palaeographers take it simply as the shape of “going round once”, a stretch of days that runs out and returns to its start, while 說文 analyses it as 勹 plus 日, making the outer stroke an arm wrapped around. The coil reading leads, so the picture is graded probable. The use is not in doubt: the Shang counted in ten-day rounds and divined at the end of each one about the next, so 卜旬 “divining for the coming ten days” runs all through the records.
