甲骨文“年”上半是“禾”——一棵谷子，穗子垂下来，两旁斜出叶片；下半是“人”，合起来就是人背着成熟的谷子。商代一年收一次庄稼，所以“一次收成”就叫“一年”，卜辞里常见“受年”，问的是会不会有好收成。到小篆变成从禾、千声，《说文》说“年，穀孰也”，说的还是收成这件事。

The top half of oracle-bone 年 is 禾, a grain plant with a drooping ear and leaves slanting off the stalk; the bottom half is 人, a person. Together: someone carrying the ripe crop. The Shang took one harvest a year, so “one harvest” came to mean “one year”, and the divinations often ask 受年 — whether the harvest will be granted. By the small-seal stage it was written with 禾 and 千 as the phonetic, and 說文 glosses it “年: the grain is ripe”, which is still the harvest.
