甲骨文“朝”左边是“日”夹在草木中间，右边是一弯还没落下的月亮。它和“莫”正好配成一对：同样的草和太阳，“莫”是日头沉下去，“朝”在旁边多了一个月亮。到小篆，右边那一弯被写成了“舟”形，《说文》于是说“朝，旦也，从倝，舟声”——那是字形变过以后的分析，不是甲骨文的画面。小学堂甲骨文库里这个字只收了三个形体，所以三种写法这里全画了出来。

Oracle-bone 朝 puts a 日 (sun) among grass on the left and a moon that has not yet set on the right. It pairs with 莫: the same grass and sun, but 莫 has the sun going down and 朝 adds the moon beside it. By the small-seal stage the right-hand crescent had been rewritten as 舟 (boat), which is why 說文 analyses it as “from 倝 with 舟 as the phonetic” — an account of the later shape, not of the oracle-bone picture. The 小學堂 database holds only three attested forms of this character, so all three are drawn here.
