甲骨文“莫”是“日”落在“茻”（一大片草）当中：上下各两丛草，太阳夹在中间，正是日头沉进草木里的黄昏。写法很活——有的只在上面写草，太阳有时作圆圈，有时作方框，有时缩成一个竖着的小菱形。后来“莫”被借去表示“不要”，人们只好在下面再添一个“日”，另造了今天的“暮”。《说文》说“莫，日且冥也，从日在茻中”，跟甲骨文的结构对得上。

Oracle-bone 莫 sets a 日 (sun) inside 茻 (thick grass): two tufts above, two below, the sun caught between them — the hour when the sun drops into the undergrowth. The forms vary freely: some write grass only above, and the sun is a circle, a box, or a small upright lozenge. 莫 was later borrowed to write “do not”, so a second 日 was added underneath to make today’s 暮 for dusk. 說文 says “莫: the sun about to darken; 日 among 茻”, which matches the oracle-bone structure.
