甲骨文“夕”和“月”本来是同一个形体，都是一弯月牙。刻手想分开它们，就靠中间那一道短笔：有的时期“月”加笔、“夕”不加，有的时期正好相反，所以最后还是要看辞例——出现在“今夕”“夕雨”这类记时间的话里读“夕”。因为一个形体要读成两个字，这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。《说文》说“夕，莫也，从月半见”，讲的是月亮只露出一半。

Oracle-bone 夕 and 月 are one and the same graph: a slim crescent. Scribes tried to keep them apart with the short mark inside — in some periods 月 carries it and 夕 does not, in others the other way round — so in the end the reading comes from the sentence, and the crescent is read 夕 in time phrases such as 今夕 (this evening) or 夕雨 (rain in the evening). Because one drawing is read as two characters, the picture is graded probable. 說文 explains it as “evening; the moon only half showing”.
