甲骨文“昔”由两部分拼成：几道像波浪的横线，和一个“日”。多数写法把水放在上面、太阳放在下面，今天“昔”字上下两截就是这么来的；也有把太阳写在上头的。古文字学者多读作“发大水的那些日子”，用来指过去；《说文》则把上半截讲成晾晒的干肉（“昔，乾肉也”）。两种说法并存，水说领先，所以图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 昔 joins two parts: several wavy lines and a 日 (sun). Most forms put the water on top and the sun below, which is where the two decks of the modern character come from, though some forms put the sun above instead. Palaeographers mostly read it as “the days of the great flood”, hence “long ago”; 說文 instead takes the upper part for strips of meat drying in the sun (“昔，乾肉也”). Both readings are in circulation, with the flood reading leading, so the picture is graded probable.
