甲骨文“糸”是一束绞起来的丝：中间绞成两三个圈，上下两头常常散出几根丝头。商代的丝织已经很成熟，后来许多与丝、绳、织有关的字都用它作偏旁。

Oracle-bone 糸 is a hank of twisted silk: two or three loops in the middle, with loose ends splaying at the top and bottom. Shang silk weaving was already highly developed, and many later characters for thread, cord and weaving are built on this element.
