多数古文字学者认为“不”画的是花萼（花蒂）：上面的尖是萼，下面垂的是细须，也就是“柎”的本字；另有人认为画的是植物的根。《说文》说“不”是“鸟飞上翔不下来”，那是汉代人对小篆的猜想，今天一般不采用。花萼一说明显占优，所以标为较可能的解释。在甲骨文里，这个字已经只当否定词用了。

Most palaeographers read 不 as the calyx of a flower — the point above is the calyx and the strands below are its fibres, making it the original graph of 柎; a minority read it as a plant root. 說文 explains it as a bird flying up and not coming down, a Han guess at the seal shape that is no longer followed. The calyx reading clearly leads, hence "probable". In the oracle bone script the graph already serves only as a negator.
