这个字形有几种读法：《说文》说它是乡里立的旗子，长笔是旗杆，短撇是飘带；郭沫若认为长笔是犁，短撇是犁翻起来的土；也有人说长笔是刀，短撇是削下来的碎屑。三说都有人主张，谁也没有明显占上风，所以标为学界有争议。稳定的只有字形本身：一条长笔加两三道短撇。卜辞里“勿”是禁止或否定的词，常和“其”配着用。

The shape has several readings. 說文 calls it a village banner: the long stroke is the pole and the flecks are streamers. 郭沫若 read the long stroke as a plough and the flecks as soil thrown up; others take it for a knife with chips falling away. All three are argued and none clearly leads, so the badge says disputed. Only the shape is stable: one long stroke plus two or three short flecks. In divination records 勿 is a negative or prohibitive word, often paired with 其.
