Oracle-bone 鬯 opens with a mouth that curls up on both sides, and cuts crossing diagonals and dots inside the body — generally taken to be the grains of millet the wine is made from, though some read them simply as the wine standing in the vessel. The divination records say “two 卣 of 鬯”, so the wine was measured by the 卣. 說文 says it was brewed from black millet with fragrant herbs and used to bring the spirits down.
