这个字形作上尖下鼓的囊形，上面还有一道勾出去的梁。多数古文字学者认为它画的是一件带提梁的盛酒器，卜辞里“鬯二卣”正是拿它来量酒；《说文》则把同一个字头讲成草木下垂的果实，《汉语多功能字库》一类工具书也先按字形把它读作树上的果实，再附上酒器一说。因为一个形体有这两种读法，这里的图形解释标为较可能。

The graph is a pouch shape, pointed on top and swelling below, with a handle hooking out above. Most palaeographers read it as a lidded wine container with a swing handle — the divination records measure wine as “two 卣 of 鬯”. 說文, under the same head, instead explains it as fruit hanging from a plant, and reference works such as 漢語多功能字庫 likewise read the shape first as fruit on a tree and give the vessel only as a second account. Because one shape carries both readings, the picture is graded probable.
