甲骨文“酉”画的是一只尖底的酒器：最上面是窄口和口沿，接着是宽宽的肩，坛身向下收成一个尖，腹上刻一到三道横线，表示箍带或坛里的酒面。这个字后来被借去记地支的第十位，“酒”字也是在它旁边加水写成的。

Oracle-bone 酉 draws a pointed-bottomed wine vessel: a narrow mouth and rim at the top, then a wide shoulder, and a body tapering to a point, with one to three lines across the belly for the bands or the level of the wine inside. The sign was later borrowed for the tenth of the earthly branches, and 酒 (wine) is this jar with water added beside it.
