甲骨文“壶”从上到下把一件壶画全了：尖顶的盖、一道横的口沿、鼓起的腹和外撇的足。有的写法在腹上加交叉的网纹或几道横纹，那是壶身的花纹。《说文》说壶是“象形”，说的正是这个轮廓。

Oracle-bone 壺 draws a whole jar from top to bottom: the pointed lid, a bar for the mouth, the swelling belly and a splayed foot. Some forms cover the belly with crossing lattice or a few bands — that is the decoration on the vessel. 說文 calls 壺 a pictograph, and this outline is what it means.
