甲骨文“缶”由两部分合成：下面张口的弧形是陶罐；上面那一笔，一般认为是杵——做陶器的时候用它把泥捣实，也有人把它看作盖在罐口上的盖子。《说文》说缶是“瓦器，所以盛酒浆”，还说秦人敲着它来打拍子。

Oracle-bone 缶 is built from two parts: the open curve below is the clay jar; the mark above it is generally taken to be the pestle used to pound the clay firm, though some read it as a lid set over the mouth. 說文 calls 缶 “earthenware, for holding wine”, and adds that the people of Qin beat one to keep time.
