甲骨文“鬲”上面一横是宽宽的口沿，下面三个鼓起的袋形是它的空心足。和“鼎”相比，鼎的足是三根实心的柱，鬲的足是三个鼓起的口袋，能多盛水，也热得更快。《说文》说鬲“象腹交文，三足”。

Oracle-bone 鬲 draws the wide rim as one bar and the three hollow legs as three swelling bags below. Beside 鼎, whose legs are three solid posts, the legs of 鬲 are pouches: they hold more water and heat it faster. 說文 describes it as “a crossed pattern on the belly, three legs”.
