甲骨文“册”把一根根简画成竖画，长短不齐，中间用一道或两道横画表示编绳。商代已经用这样的简册记事，只是竹木容易烂，留到今天的字大多在甲骨和青铜器上。《说文》说它“象其札一长一短，中有二编之形”。

Oracle-bone 冊 draws each slip as an upright, some long and some short, and shows the binding cord as one or two horizontals across them. The Shang already kept records on such bundles, but bamboo and wood rot, so almost all the writing that survives is on bone and bronze. 說文 describes it as “slips one long, one short, with two bindings through the middle”.
