甲骨文“画”上半是“聿”，也就是手握着笔，下半是画出来的花纹，多作两道相对的弯钩交叉，有的还在外面加一个菱形的框。《说文》说“画，界也。象田四界，聿所以画之”，那是把下半看作田地的界线；甲骨文的下半更像笔画出来的纹样。

Oracle-bone 畫 puts 聿 — a hand with a brush — on top, and the drawn pattern below: usually two facing hooks that cross, sometimes inside a lozenge frame. 說文 explains it as “畫 is a boundary; it pictures the four edges of a field, and 聿 is what draws them”, reading the lower half as field boundaries; in the oracle-bone forms that lower half looks more like a pattern laid down by the brush.
