甲骨文“聿”是一只手握着笔杆：斜出的一道加上两三根手指是手，直的一竖是笔杆；有的写法在笔杆下端分出几股，那是蘸墨的笔毛。后来加上竹头，就成了今天的“笔”。《说文》说“聿，所以书也”，还记下楚、吴、燕三地不同的叫法。

Oracle-bone 聿 is a hand holding a brush: the slanting stroke with two or three fingers is the hand, the straight upright is the shaft, and some forms split the lower end into strands — the inked tip. Adding a bamboo top later gave the modern 笔. 說文 says “聿 is what one writes with”, and records different local names for it in Chu, Wu and Yan.
