甲骨文“典”上面是“册”，下面是左右两只手，合起来就是双手捧着简册。有的写法在册和手之间加一道横，像把册放在几案上。《说文》说“典”是“五帝之书”，从“册”在“丌”（几案）上。和“册”相比，“典”多出下面的一双手。
甲骨文「典」上面是「冊」，下面是左右兩隻手，合起來就是雙手捧著簡冊。有的寫法在冊和手之間加一道橫，像把冊放在几案上。《說文》說「典」是「五帝之書」，從「冊」在「丌」（几案）上。和「冊」相比，「典」多出下面的一雙手。
Oracle-bone 典 sets 冊 above two hands, one on each side: slips held up in both hands. Some forms add a bar between the slips and the hands, as if the bundle were resting on a table. 說文 calls 典 “the books of the Five Emperors”, made of 冊 on top of 丌, a table. Beside 冊, 典 has that extra pair of hands below.
