甲骨文“玉”是一竖串着三道横：竖是绳子，横是一片片的玉。和“王”相比，“王”画的是一把刃口朝下的大斧，最上一横离得近；“玉”的三横上下匀称。《说文》说玉“象三玉之连，丨，其贯也”。

Oracle-bone 玉 is one upright threading three horizontals: the upright is the cord, the horizontals are the jade pieces. Beside 王, which pictures a broad axe blade-down and whose top bar sits close under the head, the three bars of 玉 are spaced evenly. 說文 says 玉 “pictures three jades joined, with 丨 as the thread”.
