下面是盛饭的器皿：碗身、碗里一横表示饭，底下是足。上面那个尖顶的“亼”，一种说法是盖在器上的盖子，一种说法是凑下来的一张嘴（“令”上面的“亼”也有这两种读法），两说都通向同一幅画面：人就着这器吃饭。有的写法在两旁再点几笔，像撒出来的饭粒。《说文》把它分析成“从皀，亼声”，把上半当作声符。

Below is the food vessel — the bowl, one bar inside it for the grain, and the foot. The pointed 亼 on top is read either as a lid set over the vessel or as a mouth bending down to it (the 亼 over 令 carries the same two readings), and both come to the same picture: someone eating at the vessel. Some spellings add short strokes at the sides like scattered grains. 說文 analyses it as 从皀，亼聲, treating the upper part as a phonetic.
