左边是“皀”，尖顶的饭堆盛在带足的器里；右边是跪坐的人，头朝着饭。人还没吃，只是靠过去，所以“即”有走近、就的意思。《说文》解作“即食也”，正说的是这个动作。

On the left is 皀, a pointed heap of grain in a footed vessel; on the right kneels a person whose head leans towards it. The person has not eaten yet, only drawn near, which is why 即 means to approach, to go right up to. 說文 glosses it 即食也, 'going to the food', which is exactly that gesture.
