尸 and 人 are both a person in profile; the difference is below the waist. In 人 the leg runs straight down, while in 尸 the body folds below the waist and the leg bends forward. Two accounts of that posture are in play: most modern palaeographers read it as squatting with the knees drawn up, which is also why 尸 came to write the person who stood in for the dead at a sacrifice; 說文 instead glosses it as “laid out”, a picture of lying down. The first reading clearly leads, so the picture is graded probable. The character 屍 for a corpse is a later formation.
