甲骨文“血”是在“皿”上加一点：下面是一件敞口的盛器，上面那一滴（有的写作两道短竖）就是盛在里面的牲血。商人祭祀要把牲血盛在器里献上，所以这个字一开始就和祭祀连在一起。分辨“血”和“皿”只看一件事：器口上多不多那一滴。《说文》说“血，祭所薦牲血也”。

Oracle-bone 血 is 皿 with a mark added: below is an open vessel, and the drop above it — written in some hands as two short uprights — is the animal blood held inside. The Shang presented blood in a vessel at sacrifices, so the character belonged to ritual from the start. Telling 血 from 皿 comes down to one thing: whether there is an extra drop at the mouth. 說文 says “血 is the blood of the victim offered in sacrifice”.
