甲骨文“肉”是一块肉的侧面：轮廓常常一边平、一边鼓出，里面加一两道短纹表示纹理。它和“月”很像，分别在于“月”是细细的一牙弯月、当中空着，“肉”的块头厚实、里面有纹。做偏旁时“肉”写成“月”的样子，所以“肝”“肺”“胃”里的那个“月”其实是肉。《说文》说“肉，胾肉。象形”。
甲骨文「肉」是一塊肉的側面：輪廓常常一邊平、一邊鼓出，裡面加一兩道短紋表示紋理。它和「月」很像，分別在於「月」是細細的一牙彎月、當中空著，「肉」的塊頭厚實、裡面有紋。做偏旁時「肉」寫成「月」的樣子，所以「肝」「肺」「胃」裡的那個「月」其實是肉。《說文》說「肉，胾肉。象形」。
Oracle-bone 肉 is a slab of meat seen from the side: the outline is usually flat on one edge and swollen on the other, with one or two short lines inside for the grain. It sits very close to 月: the moon is a thin crescent with nothing inside, while the meat is a solid block with marks in it. As a component 肉 is written in the shape of 月, which is why the 月 in 肝, 肺 and 胃 is really flesh. 說文 says “肉 is a cut of meat; the character is a picture.”
