“骨”在甲骨文里写作“冎”：两段带关节的骨头互相勾连，旁边没有“肉”。于省吾把这个形体讲成骨架彼此支撑的样子，这是今天通行的解释。不过它在已著录的甲骨上只见到两例，究竟画的是身上哪一处骨头——是剔去肉以后互相勾住的骨节，还是占卜用的肩胛骨本身——单凭这两个形体还定不下来，所以图形解释标为较可能。到小篆才在下面加上“肉”，成为今天的“骨”。《说文》说“骨，肉之覈也”。

In oracle-bone script 骨 is written 冎: two jointed pieces of bone hooked into each other, with no 肉 (flesh) beside them. 于省吾 reads the form as a bone frame whose parts prop each other up, and that is the standard explanation today. But only two examples are catalogued, and which bone of the body is drawn — jointed pieces left after the flesh was stripped away, or the shoulder blade used for divination itself — cannot be settled from two forms, so the picture is graded probable. The 肉 element was added underneath only at the small-seal stage, giving today's 骨. 說文 says “骨 is the hard core of the flesh”.
