甲骨文“老”是长发、伛偻的人形：头顶的长发常常分作两三绺向上竖起，身子弯下去，身前还有一道长长的斜画。多数学者把这道斜画读作老人拄的手杖，也有人认为它是“匕”一类的构件，不是杖（《说文》就把“老”分析成“从人、毛、匕”）。人形与长发没有争议，这一笔的解释还没有定论，所以标为“较可能”。
甲骨文「老」是長髮、傴僂的人形：頭頂的長髮常常分作兩三綹向上豎起，身子彎下去，身前還有一道長長的斜畫。多數學者把這道斜畫讀作老人拄的手杖，也有人認為它是「匕」一類的構件，不是杖（《說文》就把「老」分析成「从人、毛、匕」）。人形與長髮沒有爭議，這一筆的解釋還沒有定論，所以標為「較可能」。
Oracle-bone 老 is a stooping long-haired figure: the hair on the crown usually stands up in two or three locks, the body bends over, and a long slanting stroke runs down in front. Most scholars read that stroke as the old person's walking stick; others take it as a component like 匕 rather than a stick — that is how 說文 analyses the character, as 从人、毛、匕. The figure and the long hair are not in doubt, but that one stroke is unsettled, so the reading is marked as probable.
