甲骨文“立”是“大”下面加一横：这一横是地面，两只脚正踩在上面。地线有的刻得又长又直，有的略带弧形，还常常比人形宽出一截。在字形上加一笔来指出位置，这种造字法叫指事。

Oracle-bone 立 is 大 with one bar underneath: the bar is the ground, and the two feet stand on it. The ground line is cut long and straight in some forms, gently curved in others, and often runs wider than the figure. Adding a stroke to point out a place like this is called an indicative graph.
