甲骨文“天”是在“大”的头上加重一笔：早期把头顶画成方框或圆圈，晚期常常简化成头顶上的一道长横。它本指人的头顶，后来才引申为头顶之上的“天”；《说文》说“天，颠也”，颠就是头顶。和“夫”比一比：“夫”加的是一根短短的横簪，簪子上面还露出一小截头。

Oracle-bone 天 weights the head of 大: early forms draw the crown as a box or a ring, later ones often reduce it to one long bar across the top. It first meant the crown of the head, and only later the sky above it; the 說文 gloss is “天，顛也” — 顛 is the crown. Compare 夫, where what is added is a short hairpin with a stub of head still showing above it.
