甲骨文“从”是两个“人”并排，手臂都甩向同一侧：有的写法把跟在后面的那个写得低一些，有的两人齐高，手臂有时从肩上下垂，有时平伸成一横。它和“比”的字形十分接近，卜辞里主要靠辞例分辨；“北”则是两人背对背，手臂各自甩向外侧。后来在两人旁边加上表示道路的“彳”和表示脚的“止”，写成“從”，今天的简化字“从”正是甲骨文最早的写法。

Oracle-bone 从 is two 人 figures side by side with their arms thrown to the same side: in some forms the trailing figure is set lower, in others the two stand level, and the arm may hang from the shoulder or reach out as a bar. Its shape is very close to 比, and in divination records the two are told apart mainly by context; 北 instead turns the two figures back to back, with the arms thrown outwards. A 彳 (road) and a 止 (foot) were later added beside the pair to write 從; the simplified 从 in use today is the earliest oracle-bone shape.
