甲骨文“众”是三个人形，上面一个方框形。这个方框读作什么有两说：多数学者读作“日”，写的是众人在太阳下劳作；也有人读作“目”，写的是有人在上面监视——小篆“眾”的上部正作“目”。三个人形表示人多没有争议，上面那个部件还在讨论，所以标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 众 is three human figures under a frame. What the frame is has two readings: most scholars take it as 日, the sun, with people at work beneath it; others as 目, an eye, watching over them — the small-seal form 眾 does carry 目 on top. That the three figures mean "many people" is not in doubt, but the element above is still discussed, so the reading is marked as probable.
