甲骨文“母”就是“女”加两点：跪坐的人形、身前合抱的双臂、穿过抱圈的身线，都和“女”一模一样，只是圈里身线两侧各多一道短竖，指胸部。《说文》把它讲成“从女，象褱子形”，又说“一曰象乳子也”。商王的母辈在卜辞里称“母某”，是重要的受祭对象。

Oracle-bone 母 is 女 with two marks added: the kneeling figure, the arms folded in front and the body stroke running through the loop are exactly as in 女, and only the two short strokes inside the loop, one on each side of the body, marking the chest, are new. The Han dictionary 說文解字 analyses it as 女 plus a shape it reads as a child being held, and records a second account in which the marks depict nursing. Women of the royal mothers' generation appear in the divination records as 母 plus a name, and were important recipients of sacrifice.
