Oracle-bone 子 is a baby with an outsized head: a square head on top, two arms lifted at the sides, and the body wrapped below into a single leg. When Shang scribes cut day-dates they wrote the first of the twelve branches, 子, with a different and fuller sign — a head with hair standing up and the fontanelle still open on top — and put this baby graph to work for 巳, the sixth branch, so in a date it has to be read from its position. Today's 子 descends straight from the baby graph; 說文 explains the character by the eleventh month, when “the yang force stirs and all things multiply”, which is a Han-dynasty reading rather than the oracle-era picture.
