甲骨文“北”是两个人形背对背，各自把手臂甩向外侧，本义就是“背”。后来这个字被借去记“北方”的“北”，原来的意思才另造“背”字来写。和“从”“比”比一比：那两个字的人都朝同一边，只有“北”的两人朝向相反。

Oracle-bone 北 is two figures back to back, each swinging an arm outward, and its original meaning was simply “the back”. The graph was later borrowed to write “north”, and a new character 背 was made for the old sense. Compare 从 and 比, where both figures face the same way: only in 北 do they turn away from each other.
