这个字形画的是一个人，头上飘着长长的头发。《甲骨文编》把这些形体收在“髟”下，高鸿缙一派认为“髟”就是“髮”的初文。可是它和“老”“长”画的都是长头发的人，很难截然分开：“老”的头发从头顶向上散开，“长”还多一根手杖，“髟”的头发则向后飘。人形加长发这幅画没有争议，争的是同一批形体该归到哪个字头，所以这里的图形解释标为较可能。《说文》说“髟，長髮猋猋也”，讲的正是头发飘扬的样子。

The graph shows a person with long hair blowing from the head. 《甲骨文編》 files these forms under 髟, and 高鴻縉 and others take 髟 to be the original character for 髮 “hair”. But 老 and 長 also draw a long-haired figure and the three are hard to keep apart: 老 fans its hair up from the crown, 長 adds a staff, and 髟 lets the hair stream backwards. The picture — a figure with long hair — is not in doubt; what is argued is which headword one and the same set of forms belongs under, so it is graded probable. 說文's gloss, “髟 is long hair streaming”, describes exactly that blowing hair.
