甲骨文“交”是在“大”（正面站立的人）上改一处：两条腿不再分开撇出，而是在膝下交叉，交叉的地方留出一个梭形的空隙，有的写法干脆圈成一个圆环。看一个人形是“大”还是“交”，只要看两腿分不分开。《说文》说“交，交脛也”，讲的就是这两条小腿。

Oracle-bone 交 changes one thing in 大, a person standing face-on: instead of splaying apart, the two legs cross below the knee, leaving a lens-shaped gap where they meet — some hands close that gap into a ring. Deciding between 大 and 交 comes down to whether the legs part or cross. 說文 says “交 is crossing the shanks”, which is exactly those two lower legs.
