甲骨文“夭”还是那个正面的人形，只把“大”的一横平臂改成一道斜杠：手臂一上一下地摆，头也随着歪斜，这正是人跑起来的样子。“走”“奔”这些字的上半部就是“夭”。今天“夭”多用在“夭折”里，那是后来的用法。《说文》说“夭，屈也”，抓住的是身子歪斜这一点。

Oracle-bone 夭 keeps the face-on human figure but replaces the level arm-bar of 大 with a slanting one: the arms swing, one up and one down, and the head tips along with them — the shape of someone running. It is the upper element of 走 and 奔. Today 夭 mostly appears in 夭折, “to die young”, which is a later use. 說文 glosses it as “bent”, catching the tilt of the body.
