甲骨文“央”是“大”（正面站立的人）加上一根横在肩上的木架：木架两端向上翘，人头从正中间露出来，“正中”的意思就是这样来的。这根木架是什么，有两种说法：多数工具书跟着丁山，认为是套在颈上的枷，所以“央”本来是灾殃的“殃”；也有人认为是挑东西的担子。看“央”和“大”的分别，只看头上有没有那根横木。《说文》说“央，中央也”，后面把它讲成“大在冂之內”，那是照小篆字形说的。

Oracle-bone 央 is 大 — a person standing face-on — with a wooden bar laid across the shoulders: its two ends turn up and the head shows at the exact middle, which is where the sense “centre” comes from. What the bar is has two readings: most reference works follow 丁山 in taking it for a cangue locked round the neck, making 央 the original character for 殃 “calamity”, while others read it as a carrying pole. Telling 央 from 大 is just a matter of whether a bar lies over the head. 說文 glosses it “the middle” and then analyses it as 大 inside 冂, a reading of the seal shape.
