左边和“即”一样，是盛饭的“皀”；不同的是右边的人把头转开、嘴张向外，表示吃完了。所以“即”是还要吃，“既”是已经吃过，后来就当“已经”用。《说文》解作“小食也”。

The left side is the same food vessel 皀 as in 即; the difference is that the person on the right turns the head away with the mouth gaping outwards, meaning the meal is over. So 即 is about to eat and 既 has eaten, which is how 既 came to mean 'already'. 說文 glosses it 小食也.
