下半是跪坐的人形，上半是张开的大嘴，嘴的开口朝外。这个字后来专门当偏旁用：“吹”“饮”“歌”里那个张着嘴的人，就是它。《说文》说它“张口气悟也，象气从人上出之形”。

The lower half is a kneeling figure, the upper half a wide-open mouth facing outwards. The graph later works mostly as a component: the gaping person inside 吹, 飲 and 歌 is this one. 說文 describes it as 張口气悟也，象气从人上出之形, a picture of breath rising from a person.
