The shape is easy enough to see: a person standing face on, with a ring at the middle of the body. What the ring is, is the hard part. One reading takes it for a jade pendant tied at the waist — the object later written 璜 — with the colour word 黃 borrowed onto the same graph. Another takes the figure for a man with a swollen belly, the one later written 尪, the ring being the distended stomach. Both readings have their holders and the bones do not settle between them, so the badge here stays at probable. 說文 says “黃 is the colour of the ground; from 田, from 炗”, but that analysis follows the seal shape, where the middle has already become 田; there is no 田 in the oracle form. On the bones the commonest use of the word is to record the coat colour of an animal for sacrifice. It stands in this chapter because 說文 ties the colour to the soil, not because the divinations use it of a crop.
