两个部件都能单独认出来：上面那株就是“来”，下面那座带尖顶的房子是“㐭”，商代的谷仓。合起来画的是收粮入仓这件事。卜辞里这个字一般读作后世的“穑”，也就是把庄稼收回来；《说文》说“嗇，愛濇也”，把它讲成吝惜，还说“田夫謂之嗇夫”——吝惜的意思是后来才从“收起来不用”引申出的，不是甲骨上的用法。至于仓是什么样子，字只给了一个尖顶的轮廓；真正的商代仓窖形制，要看殷墟挖出来的窖穴。

Both halves can be named on their own: the plant above is 來, and the peaked building below is 㐭, a grain store. Together they draw the bringing in of a crop. On the bones the word is generally read as the one later written 穡, to reap and gather. 說文 glosses 嗇 as “sparing, grudging”, and adds that “a farmer is called a 嗇夫” — but the sense of grudging grew later out of putting something away unused, and is not how the bones use it. As for what the store looked like, the character gives only a peaked outline; the actual shape of Shang storage pits is a question for the excavated pits at Yinxu.
